Posted on 02. Jan, 2009 by Derrick in How To, Making Money Online, Social Media, Videos
Just made my second How-To video, This time on Gravatars, part one explains what they are and why you should get one and part two shows you how to set one up and get it working.
Please note I had some audio sync issues with a new piece of software I’ve been using, so please excuse this until I get it sorted
Update 3/1/09 - Reuploaded 2nd Video - Audio sync problems have been fixed
Enjoy, and don’t forget if there is something you’d like to know how to do, please leave a comment, and I’ll do my best to answer,
Derrick

Gravatars - How to Install Gravatar Plugin for Wordpress 2.7 (For enhanced functionality)
Please note that wordpress 2.7 already has gravatar function (I found this out after I did this video), however this plugin, provides more functionality (will detail these in later post). To customise and adjust settings for using standard Gravatar wordpress 2.7 interface, go to settings > discussion and scroll down to find the Gravatar settings.

Hi Harry,
Thanks for your comments! Appreciate the feedback, with regards to the Mic I was using. . actually nothing special, I went out and bought a sony lapel mic that was on special, but it turned out the volume was way too low for this model (might have been a battery problem), so ended up just using the built in mic with my MacBook Pro
But generally you should be able to get pretty good sound with most mics that you can pick up for around $20-30 - Actually just checked Amazon.com for lapel Microphones, and there’s some pretty good name brand ones for under US$30 (I personally like the audio technica or olympus ones
- both under $30)
Hope that helps!

Hey Derrick,
thanks for these videos mate. I been wondering about the pictures in peoples blogs and what the hell a gravatar is. Now it makes sense.
So how do I turn the gravatar on in my blog?
Also, sorry to say that your blog looked cooler yesterday. Could have been the smoke though.
I used a theme called polaroid V2 for my blog. a few tweaks and a bit of photoshop. it’s turned out half okay. Dont ask what I did though. I had to go into the CSS and I never remember what I’ve done when it gets to that point.
What are you using for screen capture on the mac?

Hi Dave,
thanks for your comments. . yeah that was me too a few days ago
GETTING GRAVATAR TURNED ON FOR YOUR BLOG:
ok. getting down to business : about getting your avatars turned on, are you using wordpress version 2.7? if so, go to the setting tab on the left menu, and click on it, then a bunch of other tabs will open beneath it, click on Discussion (the 4th one) and scroll down and you’ll see the settings for avatars.
If you are using an older version of wordpress, you may need to install a plugin - i’ve done a video for that as well. but it was done in wordpress version 2.7. . I’ll post it up, in case that helps
SCREEN CAPTURE FOR MAC
There are a variety of programs that can do it, the one that i think is the best is one called Screenflow. .
BLOG THEME
thanks for the heads up on the blog theme, nice photoshop work by the way. . in reference to my theme, did you prefer the one where I had a cartoon header? is that the one you’re referring to? Thanks for your feedback too!
Cheers,
Derrick

Hi Derrick,
What great videos, I already knew about gravatars but I’d never heard how they got their names. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, you do an excellent job producing them!
How do you put your live video in the corner of the screen while you video the program you’re working with, is that a Mac program? I really like that method of teaching, it’s nice to be able to see the person who’s talking while they’re teaching!
Thanks for all of the helpful info, keep up the great work!

Hey Kevin,
glad you enjoyed the videos :). .
I use a program called screenflow (mac only) which allows me to record me and the screen at the same time
if not its time to switch
hehe
so if you’re a mac man then that’s good
here’s the link: http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm
